The abortion issue is discussed here. All points of view are welcome.

Re: Abortion

This is a subject I always struggle with...how can I be anti death penalty yet be pro choice?

I know it sounds so hypocritical, but it is the way I feel.

Perhaps it's because I am a woman, and I think I should have control over my body. Maybe it's because I don't think of the death penalty as a moral issue, I think of it as a faulty means of punishment within the justice system.

I don't know...but it's something that I can't seem to reconcile in my own mind at times.

Re: Abortion

I know exactly how you feel. I'm coming at the problem from the opposite angle to you - I'm pro capital punishment and yet pro life.

Most moral issues are complex and I am always very reluctant to be judgemental on people's behaviour. My own feelings are that if the mother's life is in danger I would have no problem with her having an abortion. I would also support her if she conceived as the result of rape or incest.

My big problem is with women who use abortion as their principal or even only method of contraception. In my opinion that is cruel, selfish and ought to be subject to some sort of penalty. In Britain we have thousands of women having abortions on my taxes simply because they can't be bothered to enjoy sex responsibly.

When I fell pregnant with my first child the doctor told me he would be born with certain genetic defects and advised me to have him aborted. My husband said he would support me whatever decision I took. I chose to keep the baby and have a lovely 5 year old boy called Louis who is a joy. OK, he does have problems that other boys his age don't have but I'm so happy I chose to keep him rather than take the doctor's advice.

Sorry, I'm rambling again.

Re: "My big problem is with women who use abortion as their principal or even only method of contraception."

Most definitely, this drives me crazy too. I don't get people sometimes. I think of abortion as a last resort kind of choice.

Although our health care system is different because it is privately funded (that is a whole other gripe for me, being Canadian - lol), what angers me is when people who are getting state assisted medical care (Medicaid/Welfare) continue to have children.

The responsible decision while on state assistance is, of course, to not have any more children because one cannot afford them. But the state has no right to mandate that to anyone in that situation. Their stipend from the government simply goes up when they do have a child...and so the cycle continues.

It's not that I think the government should intervene, but that people should make more responsible choices depending on their financial situation at that point in their lives. When their finances improve and they can better afford it, then they should contemplate having children.

In a perfect world, eh? emoticon

Dear Michigan Magpie, RIGHT ON! I call the 1's who keep having kids they can't afford the "9 monthers". I can't stand this! I think it's child abuse to have kids you can't afford and then COUNT ON the taxpayer to support them and you! And the excuse I don't have money for birth control is a cop-out. If you don't have money, go to Planned Parenthood! And condoms are only a few $. Abstinence is FREE! No one died from not having sex!

Re: Abortion

I tried to persuade a girlfriend of mine not to have an abortion.. I concentrated on trying to get her boyfriend to wake up to the Christian values he claimed to espouse! I lost the argument and the child became an abortion statistic! I sometimes think that if i said or did something different that child would be alive today! I simply can't stand the feeling of helplessness when the life of a child is at stake!

Some may call me a hypocrite because i accept abortion in the cases of severe birth defects and rape victims..The all or nothing thinking, which we have in the abortion and the DP debate as well, is unhealthy and extremist!

i am sixty years old, and i don't know whether or not abortion is right or wrong. i do know that if it is wrong, the woman will have to explain it to god, not me. it is no one else's business what the woman does with her body.

I agree, Anna. Both issues are so complex that the all or nothing thinking just doesn't fit. There are too many what if's and exceptions when it comes to both topics for many people. It is hard not to take it to heart when a child is aborted and you oppose abortion with all of your heart. But you shouldn't blame yourself. People will do what they want to do no matter what you say or do. You should be patting yourself on the back for standing up for your beliefs and making an effort to do something about it.
